A Laughing Kookaburra comes to lunch

Several days after Christmas last year we had a family picnic at Lane Cove National Park. It was a hot and humid day and the bird life was rather quiet. My son often comes here with his camera looking for birds to photograph. I did manage a modest list for the day, but this was not my main objective. I wanted photographs of species I don’t see at home in Murray Bridge.

After a long walk along the river we came back in time for lunch – hot, tired and not a little sweaty. As we were eating this friendly Laughing Kookaburra joined us. He flew on to a branch only five metres from our picnic table, eying off any food he might snatch in a moment of human inattention. Had he succeeded he would have tasted some of our delicious Christmas lunch leftovers.

    Hi Trevor,
Good to see you’re back safely, and that the Bog is back to giving us up-to-date posts.

I have had Kookaburras take a sausage right of the hot pate of the BBQ! Very cheeky.

We get them quite a lot here, though they’re not native to Tassie – introduced, like so many other species!

Have a great, bird-filled New Year!

Hi there John – good to hear from you again. The trip was great with no hassles. Being with wife and daughter who are not really into birds is a challenge – balancing birding with general sightseeing.

Sorry about the blog not giving recent posts for a few hours. My son, who does all the admin stuff, accidentally configured the blog to point to an old database – gave him a few headaches finding the error he’d made – plus a slight panic attack thinking he’d lost about 9 months of my blog!!!

I’ve also had the experience of having a sausage stolen off the BBQ plate by a Kookaburra. The one shown in the photos above came as close as about 4 metres. It was a family post-Christmas picnic – perhaps 9 of us was a tad intimidating.

All is fixed now. He is updating all of our family blogs (7 between the five of us).

  3. […] never did see the kookaburra that woke me – so I’ve included a photo of one I saw in Lane Cove National Park on our last visit some 18 months earlier. Tags: Dawn chorus, Kookaburra, Narrandera Category: […]
